The Johan Cruijff ArenA aims to be a leader not only in fan experience and mobility, but also in safety and digitalization. The National Police and the City of Amsterdam shared this ambition. Together, they sought a solution that uses technology to better support people, without increasing complexity.
Blue Force Tracking seamlessly aligns with this vision. The platform combines camera technology, IoT sensors, and smart data integration to enhance safety in public spaces and accelerate support services.
Blue Force Tracking (BFT) ensures that support services are immediately alerted in the event of an incident. The platform automatically analyzes camera footage and identifies situations where support may be needed. At the same time, BFT provides insight into the location of police officers and stewards, allowing assistance to be deployed targeted and quickly.
Additionally, IoT sensors are integrated into the clothing of security personnel. These sensors provide additional context about the situation, without staff having to manually report anything. This creates real-time visibility of what is happening, precisely where it is needed.
The power of Blue Force Tracking lies in the combination of technologies and the speed with which data is processed. Camera footage is automatically analyzed, while sensor data is directly linked to location and context information. Based on this, the system generates signals for support services.
This automation is essential. In stressful or dangerous situations, there is no time for additional actions. “Technology must work in the background,” was a key principle within the project. BFT fully takes on this role and makes data-driven security practically applicable in operations.
To reliably and securely integrate these various technologies, Nalta chose Boomi Technology as the core of the platform. Boomi makes it possible to connect diverse systems with each other at lightning speed, scalably, and securely.
The development of Blue Force Tracking took place in close collaboration with all involved parties. In addition to the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the City of Amsterdam, and the National Police, Securitas (technical security partner), Genetec (camera security), and EquiVital (sensors) were also closely involved in the project.
Thanks to this collaboration, the platform could be developed entirely from scratch in just seven months.
Blue Force Tracking is designed with the future in mind. The platform is scalable to up to 100,000 security personnel and easily applicable to other locations, such as city centers, festivals, or other large-scale events. Furthermore, it can seamlessly integrate with existing security and camera systems.
The result is an innovative IoT platform that not only makes security more efficient but also more human-centric. By smartly deploying technology, police officers and stewards receive exactly the support they need — at the right time, in the right place.
